If your fancy PC case is basically going to be just large collection of tempered glass panels, suppose you might as well fill it up with something worth looking at — like screens on your motherboard, screens on your water block, screens on your RAM… How about screen on your power supply, too? With its most recent ROG Thor PSU, Asus claims there is no reason not to.

To be fair, there is a use for the huge ROG Thor 1600W Titanium III’s “magnetic OLED display.” It will display the precise amount of power your system is using at any given moment, which is something that is difficult to detect in software. (I suppose you would want to know if you were shelling out several thousand dollars for the newest parts.)

How come it is “magnetic”? Since it can be attached to either side of the PSU, it will be visible regardless of which way your fan is facing. That makes sense and is something the old model was unable to accomplish. However, in order to truly utilize it, you must ensure that the case you are using does not have a neat shroud covering your power supply.

 

According to Asus’ press release, other highlights include “Turbo Mode” fan curve that regrettably lacks dedicated button, voltage-sensing technology for stability, and gallium nitride (GaN) components for efficiency. The totally modular wires include engraved markings, and the fans are equipped with twin ball bearings. Bravo, canine! steel box that only changes electricity from AC to DC deserves lot more bullet points than that. What is the cost of this elegant power box with lots of LEDs? Asus omitted the information from its press release along with the launch date. (If you are planning your next build, keep in mind that the 1600W model’s most recent iteration cost close to $700.)
